A level position allows the oil to settle evenly in the oil pan, which is essential for a correct measurement. Before opening the hood, gather a paper towel, napkin, or thin clean cloth. You’ll need this to wipe the dipstick clean before checking the oil level. Once you’ve followed these steps, pop the hood and begin. Observing Oil Level and Condition Start by locating the oil dipstick, which is typically marked with a bright yellow or orange handle. Pull the dipstick straight out and wipe it completely clean with your paper towel or cloth. This first wipe removes any oil that could give you a false reading. Next, reinsert the dipstick fully back into its tube, making sure it is seated all the way down. Then pull it out again and hold it horizontally to get a clear reading.
