Service guideYour Lexus, properly maintained.

What is due for service at your mileage?

Most people reading this have a maintenance reminder lit, a letter in the mail or a noise they cannot place. They want to know what is due, whether it is covered, and how much of the week the car will be here.

So the tables come first, and the reading is optional. The interval table answers the question at every step from the first service through 60,000 miles, including the ones you have already passed.

Where a figure depends on your car, send us the VIN and we will read it from the record. Start with the question that brought you here.

What is a service visit here like?

Every 6 months or 5,000 miles

The months and the miles both count, so whichever you reach first is the one. A car that sits still reaches its visit on the date.

Your first two services are covered.

The first two visits are on LexusCare: at 6 months or 5,000 miles and at 12 months or 10,000 miles. From the third onward, the bill is yours.

Saturday closes at one.

The lane runs 7:30 to 6:00 on weekdays and 8:00 to 1:00 on Saturday. A Saturday job is worth booking early in the week.

What should you expect from a Lexus service visit here?

Step 1: Give us the odometer reading

The odometer reading tells us which step of the schedule you are on and how long we need the bay for your car.

Step 2: Tell us what you are hearing

Describing the noise gets you the right technician and the right slot length instead of a guess.

Step 3: Drop-off starts at 7:30 am on a weekday

The Saturday lane shuts at one o'clock, so book weekend work early in the week.

Step 4: We pull your VIN, your record and anything open

Work done at any Lexus dealership is on the national record, so a visit made elsewhere still counts.

Step 5: You hear what was found before anything is decided

If an inspection turns into a replacement, we show you the measurement behind it.

Step 6: Work starts when you say so

Anything deferred goes on the record, so your next visit starts from it.

Book the visit

Want a service date based on your mileage and symptom?

A booking with an odometer reading and a description of the noise gets a slot of the right length, and we pull the parts before you arrive. A booking with only the model gets an educated guess.

If you need to spread the cost of a repair, ask about Service Now, Pay-Over-Time when you book, not at the counter.

How does a service visit go?

I want to know…

How soon can you take the car?

We give you the earliest date the moment you book, and that date sets up the rest of the visit.

  • We will give you the earliest date we can take the car.
  • Tell us whether it is a noise, a warning light or routine work.
  • We will tell you whether the work calls for an overnight stay.
  • We will tell you what happens when a part has to be ordered.

We can usually get you in quickly, and a phone call is the fastest way to hear the date.

Still deciding which visit you are due?

Send us the VIN and the odometer, and we will come back with the step you are on, anything open against the car, and what the last visit left for this one.

Odometer or monthsWhat landsWhat it means on the day

12 months or 10,000 milesEngine oil and filter, 0W-20The second and last visit LexusCare covers.
18 months or 15,000 milesInspection visitAxle trunks, ball joints, brake lines and hoses, coolant, exhaust, steering. Cabin filter cleaned.
24 months or 20,000 milesOil and filter againOil at the 10,000-mile steps, inspection at the 5,000-mile steps in between. That is the whole pattern.
30 months or 25,000 milesInspection visitThis step skips the oil. If a quote adds one, ask which item it is for.
36 months or 30,000 milesThe heavy oneBrake fluid, engine air filter and cabin filter all replaced, plus the oil service.
Every 6 months after thatThe pattern repeats to 60,000 miles. The Lexus schedule runs to 72 months or 60,000 miles before it repeats.
Under 10,000 miles a yearThe six-month date comes before the miles doSix months is six months, whether the car has moved or not.
A step you have gone pastBring it in and we read the VINWe pick the schedule back up from your record, so you never have to guess.

Go by the maintenance reminder and the odometer, not the sticker on the glass. Six quiet months still make the service due, and that is the half most people forget.

If you are between two columns, send the VIN. Reading your car's own history beats working backwards from a table.

2. Which items you pay for

ItemWhen it fallsThe part owners tend to miss
Engine oil and filter, 0W-20Every 10,000 milesEvery 5,000 if your car runs conventional oil instead of synthetic.
Tire rotation and pressuresEvery visit, 5,000 milesThe only item on every single step of the schedule.
Brake fluid30,000 and 60,000 milesBrake fluid runs on its own schedule, separate from the oil changes. It is the item that surprises people on a quote.
Engine air filter30,000 and 60,000 milesReplaced, not cleaned.
Cabin air filterCleaned at 15,000 and 45,000 miles, then replaced at 30,000 and 60,000Cleaning and replacing are different jobs. Ask which you are being quoted.
Smart key battery15,000 and 30,000 milesEasy to forget, and the reason a key suddenly stops working in a parking lot.
Brake pads, calipers and rotorsVisually inspected every visitLooked at every time, replaced only on measurement.
Lexus Personalized SettingsOn requestProgrammed at the 5,000-mile visit if you ask for it.
Fluid levelsInspected and adjustedPart of the inspection visits, not a separate charge.

The oil visits and the inspection visits alternate, so two consecutive services are not the same job. They should not carry the same time estimate either, and we will tell you which one you are booking.

Where the schedule says inspect instead of replace, nothing is changed automatically. If an inspection turns into a replacement, you hear which measurement it failed first.

3. Covered by LexusCare, covered by the warranty, or paid by you

What it isHow long it runsWhat it covers or costs you
LexusCare complimentary maintenanceYour first two visits, at 6 months or 5,000 and 12 months or 10,000 milesA maintenance program. It ends after the second visit.
Basic Warranty48 months or 50,000 milesThis one covers defects. It does not pay for oil, filters or brake fluid.
Powertrain Warranty72 months or 70,000 milesRuns longer than the Basic and covers less of the car.
Wheel alignment and balancing12 months or 12,000 milesThe shortest Lexus term, and the one people expect to run with the Basic.
Corrosion perforation72 months, no mileage limitRusted through, not surface rust. It matters on the coast.
Maintenance after LexusCareYoursOil, filters, fluids and rotations once the first two visits are used.
Brake pads and tiresNot warranty itemsWear items, due on measurement, not on a date.

Alignment is the gap that catches people. Twelve months or 12,000 miles is a fraction of the Basic Warranty, so an alignment at 20,000 miles is yours even with the car well inside its warranty.

Bring the quote if you are not sure which of the three applies. Telling you which line pays for it takes a minute and costs nothing.

4. Can you get your Lexus serviced somewhere else?

The situationWhere the work can happenWhat to keep
Routine maintenance you pay forAnywhere you likeRoutine maintenance can be done anywhere, and the record is what matters.
Work the warranty is paying forAn authorized Lexus dealershipWhen the manufacturer pays, it chooses the facility and the parts.
An aftermarket part was installedStill covered unless that part caused the failureProving it did is the dealer's job, not yours.
Proof of what was doneKeep every invoiceIt does not matter who held the wrench. The paperwork is what answers a claim.
Work at any Lexus dealershipWritten to Lexus National Service HistoryReadable at any Lexus dealership in the country, so a visit made on vacation still counts.

Federal law protects your warranty whoever does the routine maintenance. Every visit made at a Lexus dealership goes on the national record, so servicing with us keeps that record complete and our technicians see the car's full history.

Our advice is simple. Keep the invoices. A missing record causes arguments later far more often than the choice of shop does.

5. What still comes with an L/Certified Lexus after you buy it

The L/Certified termWhat it meansWhat to check

When the coverage startsOn purchaseNot the original in-service date, which is what the warranty runs from.
Four services, not twoTwice what a new Lexus getsAt the six-month interval, that is roughly two years of visits.

Those four covered services are the part buyers do not realize they hold. If you bought L/Certified and have been paying for oil changes, bring the paperwork and we will check what is left.

Send the VIN and we will read your actual agreement, so the answer is for your car and not the program in general. The in-service date decides the warranty, and it is rarely the date you bought the car.

Ten years or 150,000 miles is the figure that decides whether a pre-owned hybrid is a sensible buy. It covers the battery itself, not every part of the hybrid system, and that limit matters.

Ask us what we can take before booking anything battery related, and we will give you a straight answer for your car.

Plan by which visit you are on, not by an average. An inspection visit and the 30,000-mile visit are different pieces of work and should never carry the same estimate.

Tell us your mileage and anything you are hearing when you book. A slot sized for the work is the difference between waiting for the car and coming back for it.

What it coversOpen safety recalls and service campaigns since 1999Covering cars sold in the United States, its territories and Mexico.
What we needA license plate plus its state, or the 17-digit VINUse the VIN on a car you bought used. Plates follow owners, VINs follow cars.
Bringing it to usRecall work is at no cost to youNo deadline changes that, so a letter you set aside is still good.

A recall letter that has sat on the counter for months is still valid. The repair is free and does not expire. Send the VIN and we will schedule it.

It is usually worth putting a recall on the same visit as whatever else is due instead of making a separate trip. Say so when you book and we will size the slot for both.

What else you may be wondering

Intervals and what is due

How often is my Lexus due in?

Every 6 months or 5,000 miles, whichever lands first. The Lexus schedule sets out each step in turn, from the first visit through to 72 months or 60,000 miles.

The car mostly sits on the island. Is the six-month visit necessary?

Yes. Both halves of the interval are live and whichever arrives first counts, so a car that sits still reaches six months on the same day a commuter does.

My last car had a Service A and a Service B. What does Lexus call them?

Lexus does not use service letters. The schedule is named by time and mileage, as 6MO/5K, 12MO/10K and so on. Find your mileage and read down that column, or send us the VIN.

Why did my last visit not include an oil change?

Oil changes come every 10,000 miles, so the 5,000, 15,000 and 25,000-mile visits are inspection and rotation visits. That is the schedule working as designed.

Why is the 30,000-mile visit so much bigger than the one before it?

Brake fluid, the engine air filter and the cabin air filter are all replaced on top of the oil service. It is the heaviest of the ordinary visits.

What LexusCare covers

What do I get for free when the car is new?

The first and second scheduled services are included through LexusCare, at 6 months or 5,000 miles and 12 months or 10,000 miles. After the second, scheduled maintenance is yours.

Is LexusCare the same as the warranty?

No. LexusCare is a maintenance program covering two scheduled services. The warranty answers defects and never pays for oil, filters or brake fluid.

Does it matter whether my car takes synthetic oil?

It changes how often you are back here. A car on non-synthetic oil takes it every 5,000 miles instead of every 10,000, which doubles the number of oil visits over the life of the car.

Warranty, wear and what is covered

How long is the basic warranty?

48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Is my wheel alignment covered?

Only for 12 months or 12,000 miles, far shorter than the Basic Warranty. An alignment at 20,000 miles is yours even with the car inside its warranty.

Is rust covered?

Corrosion perforation is covered for 72 months with no mileage limit. Perforation means rusted through, not surface rust, which matters this close to the coast.

Are brake pads and tires covered?

No. They are wear items that come due on measurement, not on a date, and you hear which measurement failed before anything is replaced.

Having it serviced somewhere else

If I use my own mechanic, do I lose the warranty?

No. Federal law protects your warranty whoever does the routine maintenance. Servicing with us keeps the national record complete, and if you have had work done elsewhere, keep the invoices.

When is a Lexus dealership the only option?

When the warranty is paying. If the manufacturer covers the work or the parts, it chooses the facility and the parts.

Does an aftermarket part I installed myself cost me the warranty?

Yes, unless that part caused the failure, and showing that it did is the dealer's or manufacturer's job, not yours.

I had it serviced out of state. Does it count?

Yes. Work done at any Lexus dealership is written to the Lexus National Service History database, readable at any Lexus dealership in the country.

Certified pre owned

What does a car go through to be called L/Certified?

A comprehensive 161-point inspection by Lexus technicians, as part of what Lexus calls the Total View certification process, in which the car is inspected, reconditioned and evaluated.

Does an L/Certified car come with free servicing?

It does, and it is the better deal of the two. Four factory-recommended services come with it, running two years or 20,000 miles from your purchase date, not from the car's original in-service date.

Hybrid and electric

How long is the hybrid battery covered?

On a 2020 or newer car, ten years or 150,000 miles, whichever lands first. That same term reaches the plug-in hybrids, the fuel cell cars and the fully electric ones from model year 2020 onward.

Does a hybrid come in on a different schedule?

No. It is the same six-month or 5,000-mile rhythm. The battery coverage differs, not the maintenance.

Your visit here

How early can I drop the car off?

Weekdays we open the lane at 7:30 am and close at 6:00 pm. Saturday is a shorter day, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm, and nothing runs on Sunday.

Can I get a loaner car?

Ask when you book. Customers mention loaners often in their reviews. Ask when you book and we will confirm what is available for your visit.

Can I spread the cost of a repair?

Yes. Service Now, Pay-Over-Time through Sunbit is applied for online and takes about 60 seconds.

Recalls

Why does a Lexus recall search show the Toyota name?

Lexus recalls are handled through Toyota's system, which covers Lexus cars by design. Send us the VIN and we will check it for you.

I ignored a recall letter. Is it too late?

It is not. Recall work carries no charge and no expiry, so a letter from two years ago is as good as one from last week. Bring it, or the VIN on its own, and we will fit it around whatever else the car is due.

People also ask

How often does a Lexus need servicing?

The interval is 6 months or 5,000 miles, whichever lands first, and both halves count at every step. Lexus sets out what each visit contains all the way from the first one to 72 months or 60,000 miles.

Does Lexus offer free maintenance?

New cars get two services free under LexusCare, the ones falling at 6 months or 5,000 miles and 12 months or 10,000 miles. Buy L/Certified instead and you get four, running two years or 20,000 miles from your purchase.

How often should Lexus brake fluid be changed?

At 30,000 miles and again at 60,000 miles. It sits on its own clock, not the oil change clock, which is why it surprises people on a quote.

How long is the Lexus hybrid battery warranty?

Ten years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first, on 2020 and newer models, and Lexus extends the same term to plug-in hybrid, fuel cell and battery electric vehicles from model year 2020.

Can a Lexus dealer refuse warranty work because I used an independent shop?

It cannot. Federal law protects your warranty whoever does the routine maintenance, and a visit with us goes on the national Lexus record. If you have had work done elsewhere, keep the invoices.

How do I check a Lexus recall by VIN?

Send us the 17-digit VIN, or the license plate with the state it was issued in, and we check every open safety recall and service campaign since 1999 and book the work at no cost to you.

Your advisor tells you when something can wait, and says so at the estimate, ahead of the invoice.

I've been dealing with HH Lexus and Max for 4 years. I'm moving out of state and honestly, I'll miss getting my NX300 serviced there. He was always honest with me, up front with me about whether I really needed something done or not, and they ALWAYS did the job.

I love the vehicle, and don't mind paying just a little bit more to have the excellent service, the free loaner!!, and the job done by guys who know Lexus. I'll miss them, and I'll miss Max! I've never dealt with a dealership who actually kept employees this long. That really says a lot.

The visit has to fit inside a working day, and we will tell you at booking whether it fits.

Not only was I able to book a service appointment only hours ahead, but the team did all the work in a shorter than quoted time frame. Super efficient! My service manager Chip is the best. I love everything about the Lexus brand, and it's the safest car I've ever owned.
